Are you someone who loves plants but just can’t seem to keep them happy (or even ALIVE)!? It’s okay, we understand! Not everyone has a green thumb and some plants are definitely harder to keep happy than others (cough cough...Fiddle Leaf…cough cough).
There is nothing worse than purchasing a new plant, bringing it home, then days later find it struggling to hold up it’s leaves, dead in the corner. Plants are too expensive for that! So to help you out, we’ve put together this list of our top 7 easy houseplants to care for to help you choose your next plant buddy to add to your space. Don’t waste your money, and don’t put yourself through another plant funeral.
You have most likely seen a snake plant (Sansevieria) in restaurants, magazines, your local Instagram influencers home, and even your doctors office! There’s good reason for it-they are almost impossible to kill! They will thrive in almost any environment you throw them in and require very little ‘love’. They literally thrive on neglect! Originally desert plants, they are used to long periods of drought, and can go weeks without water because they store their water in their leaves! For snake plants you only have to worry about one thing, do not overwater! Make sure the soil is completely dry before watering and always make sure your plant has exceptional drainage. I have multiple snake plants in my home and I only water them maybe every three weeks (if not later because I forget about them...oops). Snake plants will also thrive in very low light and do fine in high light as well! Looking for the perfect plant!? Sansevieria will gladly be your new bestie.
Foliage lovers everywhere are attracted to the appearance of the ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas) and for good reason. Not only is this plant stunning, but it is also ridiculously easy to care for (win win)! The ZZ Plant makes the perfect housemate as they need hardly any water and have very little light requirements. Dusting of the leaves once in a while will be beneficial (like on any plant) and the more light you give it, the faster they will grow. Other than that, pretty much anything goes with this stunner!
The Monstera Deliciosa is not only incredibly Insta-worthy but it is also another very easy plant to keep alive! The Monstera is a tropical classic and like the snake plant, you’ve probably seen it featured in home magazines as it’s a beautiful addition to almost any space. The monstera is best known for it big, split leaves and deep green colour. Like the other plants on this list, the Monstera will thrive with little care, just make sure to give it enough light (NOT direct sun-your homeboy will get sunburnt) and allow the soil to dry before watering-that’s it!
I feel like cacti get a bad rep for being ‘tricky houseplants’ but that’s a myth! The only thing you should worry about with your cactus? Watering! If anything will kill these plants, its water. I mean it makes sense, ya know? They are desert plants after all! Once the soil is COMPLETLEY dry, wait another week (or two..or three) then water. When you water your cacti, less is more! The more light you place your cacti’s in, they happier it will be and will eventually flower for you, too! However, your new cacti friend can also survive in very low light, it just won’t grow as fast. So what have we learned about cacti!? They’re super easy, they just HATE water! Let em be dry and happy in peace for once, okay!?
Spider Plants are one of the most durable, hardcore easy-to-care-for houseplants out there! I have seen this plant in many shop windows, cafes, and it’s a plant that almost every grandma I know owns (shoutout to all the gma’s out there). Back in the day, the Spider Plant was a classic gift given to new neighbours, family, and used as a peace offering. Why? They are so easy to propagate as they literally make ‘babies’ like no ones business! Everyone used to own as spider plant and they’re not going away anytime soon. Spider plants prefer bright light, but will do fine in lower light conditions. If you have a variegated spider plant and place it in low light, just know that it will lose its variegation (sad face). Make sure to avoid placing in direct sun as it will burn baby burn! The spider plant looks incredible in hanging baskets and like the rest of our plants on this list, enjoy minimal watering. Going on a vacay? Don’t worry, your Spider plant will be totally fine with a week or two of neglect!
Peperomias are a fun one because there are literally over 1,000 species coming in different colours, shapes, textures, and sizes. With that many options, you’re sure to find one you love! Peperomia plants are a great one for forgetful plant parents as they require little water. That being said, this plant does need a bit more light than others mentioned on this list to be happy! Avoiding direct sunlight, make sure you place your peperomia in a brightly lit spot and watch it grow. ALSO, a lot of peperomia varieties will flower, too! Don’t like the flowers they produce? Cut em off and it will promote more growth in the foliage-it’s totally up to you, boo.
Last, but certainly not least, my personal favourite plant of all time-Pothos! Pothos are my favourite for 3 reasons: 1. There are so many stunning varieties. 2. They are super fast growers. 3. They let you know when they need water (no, not by talking to you..im not that crazy…) Pothos are a vine plant that will absolutely thrive in very bright light, not direct sunlight, and will give you new growth constantly! They will also survive in very low light and make a fabulous bathroom plant. Get creative and play with the vines in your home décor! Once you notice the leaves start to droop, and look light/lifeless, it needs water! I typically wait until I notice my Pothos are drooping before I water them and they’re happier than ever. Pothos are one of the best selling plants in the plant world and here at the store! marble queen, Neon, Golden, Pearls n Jade, Silvery Anne- I could go on for days on Pothos and the amazing varieties! I may be a bit biased here, but if you need a fun, low maintenance, versatile plant, get yourself a Pothos.
Becoming a new plant parent can seem scary, we get it!
