Plan & Prepare

Select trees that grow well in your climate and soil type. You should be well aware of the acidity in your soil and the contents as every plant has different requirements from the next. Be sure to also consider the plant’s hardiness zone. Each species has a different tolerance to late spring and early fall frosts, flooding, and drought. Lastly, consider the sun exposure of your yard and the light requirements of different trees and shrubs. How many hours in a day does your location receive full, bright sun? How many hours does your location stay in the shade? This will determine what plants will and won't work for you!

Container grown trees and shrubs can be planted anytime from spring until fall, as long as the ground is thawed. Keep trees and shrubs protected during transport and leave them in a shaded area until planting.

Planting: Getting Started

Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide as the container or root ball.

Completely remove all non-biodegradable packaging or, if your plant is in a tree basket with its roots wrapped in burlap, remove wire basket as well as the upper half of the burlap. In all cases, make sure not to damage the root ball.

Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole and fill it one-third full with good quality planting soil. Place the tree in the hole. Make sure that the top of the root ball is flush with the top of the hole.

The Key to Success

Apply MYKE® TREE & SHRUB, following the Application Chart and recommendations on the package. New roots must be in contact with MYKE®, so make sure to spread it all around the root ball with your hand.

Incorporate recommended fertilizer into the soil you’ll use to fill the planting hole. Fill the hole with the soil-fertilizer mix, making sure you press firmly without compacting around the root ball.

The Last Steps

Finish filing the hole with the remaining soil and build up a watering ring approximately 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) high all around the root ball. Fill the ring with water so it will drain down and water the roots.

Apply 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) in of mulch over the planting zone. Keep a 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) in radius around the trunk free of mulch.

Stake if necessary. Fix the trunk to the stake with a strap.

Water & Fertilize

Each tree and shrub species has specific watering requirements, so check before watering them.

Use recommended fertilizers for trees and shrubs in spring and again at mid-season. Fertilizers help trees grow and withstand drought, disease, and insects.

• When in doubt, give us a call or send us some pictures to get your warranty request looked at before you stop by.
• Have your receipt ready or check we have the purchase under your account.
• Dig up the dead tree or shrub, with as much of the plant and root ball as possible, and bring it back to Dutch Growers.
• Redeem your warranty for a one-time credit in the amount paid, which you can either apply toward a replacement or receive in the form of a warranty card, so you can make your new selection at any time afterwards! Note that any replacement trees and shrubs are not eligible for additional warranty.

All trees, shrubs, and evergreens are only replaced once, exact same tree, shrub or evergreen replacement is not guaranteed.
