Planting Potatoes

When planting seed potatoes, choose a method that works well for the space you have! You may notice sprouting on your seed potatoes — these are called 'eyes' and let you know that they're ready to be planted!

Planting in the Garden

Plant with eyes facing up! You can cut your seed potatoes in half as long as both have a few eyes.

  • Depth: 6-8"
  • Spacing: 12-15"

When your plants reach 8-10", it's time to hill. This will promote tubular growth and bigger, better yields!

  • Create a mound of soil around the plant, allowing only the top leaves to remain visible.
  • Continue this process for as long as you have soil!

Planting in Containers

For this method, choose a suitable bucket, bin, or potato bag!

  • Start with 3-4" of soil in your container.
  • 3-6 seed potatoes, eyes facing up! Some crowding isn't a concern, but make sure your container is large enough!
  • Cover with a few inches of soil.

When your plants reach 6-8", it's time to hill. This will promote tubular growth and bigger, better yields!

  • Cover around 2/3 of the plants with soil.
  • Repeat this process until your container is full!

Garden Tip

  • Keep your soil moist! However, too much water can lead to rot, so ensure you have adequate drainage.

Harvesting

  • When your plant is flowering, check for baby potatoes!
  • When the plants are brown on top, you'll have a larger size of mature potatoes
